Anonymous $100 Million Donor Enjoyed Greek Literature

May 31, 2007

The University of Chicago received $100 million dollars from an anonymous alumnus whose gift will help about 1,200 students each year. Students whose families earn between $60,000 and $75,000 will see their loans cut in half.

“I give this gift in the hopes that future generation of students will not be prevented from attending the College because of financial incapacity and may graduate without the siren of debt distracting them from fulfilling unremunerative dreams,” the donor said in a statement released by the university.

According to the university, the anonymous donor came from a modest background, graduated in the 1980s, and enjoyed Greek literature classes.
